Molecule found in oranges could reduce obesity and cure heart disease, Researchers from Western University are studying molecules in sweet oranges and tangerines called nobiletin which they have shown to dramatically reduce rat obesity and reverse negative side effects.
The new study shows that mice on a high cholesterol diet, high cholesterol who are also given nobiletin feel narrower and have insulin resistance and lower blood lipid levels than mice that are only given a high cholesterol diet.
According to Huff, he and his team from the Western Robarts Research Institute have not been able to determine exactly how nobiletin works.
Researchers have suggested that the molecule tends to act in a way that regulates how fat is processed in the body. This regulator, called AMP Kinase, contains machines in the body that burn fat to produce energy and also block fat production. Molecule found in oranges could reduce obesity and cure heart disease.
However, when the researchers examined the effects of nobiletin in mice that had been genetically engineered to eliminate AMP kinase, the effect was the same.
These results tell us that nobiletin does not work on AMP Kinase and bypasses this basic regulator of body fat.
According to the researchers, this finding is still clinically important as long as the mystery still exists, because it shows that nobiletin does not interfere with other drugs that affect the AMP kinase system. Molecule found in oranges could reduce obesity and cure heart disease.

The next step is to transfer this study to humans to see whether nobiletin has the same positive metabolic effect in human studies.
